Description

This practicum has a contemporary psychodynamic/interpersonal orientation for treatment.  Treatment focuses on interpersonal issues (styles, characteristics, and so forth) and personality features that contribute to the etiology and maintenance of psychological problems.  The treatment has a process-oriented approach and students are expected to learn empathic responding, establishment of therapeutic alliance, development and refinement of case formulation, and techniques of intervention.

Types of Cases

We normally see adult individuals with a variety of presenting problems, including anxiety, depression, grief, interpersonal problems, personality disorders; however, the type of case seen depends of the experience of the student.

Caseload

Each student is expected to carry at least two patients throughout the practicum.  Moreover, there may be opportunities to conduct personality assessments on an as-needed basis.

Supervision Approach

Supervision typically involves individual supervision where we will view tapes of sessions and a weekly group supervision with other students on the team.  This will entail likely 2-3 hours of direct supervisor/student interaction.
