Description
The CDIU rotation offers both assessment and treatment opportunities with adult inpatients with a wide range of mental health diagnoses and addictions. Patients typically are admitted on the unit from the emergency department and stay one or two weeks until they are stabilized and ready to be discharged after being connected to various community resources. Assessments must be brief and completed quickly in order to facilitate discharge planning. Referral questions usually involve delineating either the role of personality or cognitive functioning in the patient’s clinical profile. Brief individual treatment consists of cognitive therapy and motivational enhancement interventions designed to help patients transition to their community services.
In addition, there may be opportunities to participate in an eMental Health initiative on the unit. Given the diversity of patients on the unit, it is difficult to meet individual needs within a group context. The eMental Health project involves developing and recording online classes that patients can complete while they are on the unit. During their stay, patients will have access to a therapist who can assist them and review their homework. Upon discharge, patients will continue to have access to the online protocols, as will their therapists in the community.
There is the opportunity for one part-time summer practicum placement (Wednesdays & Thursdays) from May 1 – August 15 and one part-time September 1 – December 1 practicum (Thursdays only). Junior or senior graduate students are welcome to apply as this practicum can be tailored to meet your learning needs.
